The present investigation entitled “DEVELOPMENT AND IDENTIFICATION OF SUPERIOR HYBRIDS WITH LEAF BLAST RESISTANCE IN RICE (Oryza sativa L.)” was undertaken to study the gene action, combining ability and magnitude of heterosis of experimental hybrids for grain yield per plant and yield contributing characters. The analysis of variance for grain yield and yield contributing characters revealed significant difference between the treatments for all the characters under study indicating that there was sufficient variability among the lines tested. Hence, combining ability analysis was carried out. The analysis of variance for combining ability revealed significant difference between the treatments for grain yield per plant and all the component traits, thus justifying their use in the present investigation. Similarly, hybrids also varied considerably between themselves, suggesting the wide variability among the crosses. The analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that no significant differences were recorded for replications for all the traits. The lines were found significant for certain characters viz., days to 50 per cent flowering, plant height, number of productive tillers, panicle weight, 1000 grain weight, kernel breadth and length-breadth ratio. The testers were significant for 1000 grain weight while the interaction between lines and testers were significant for all the traits except kernel breadth. On the whole based on the overall mean performance, gca effects and sca effects, CMS 64A was the best tester while among the lines, WGL 14 and IET 26264 performed better. Among the hybrids, CMS 64A x WGL 14, CMS 59A x WGL 14 and CMS 23A x IET 26264 performed superior to hybrid check US 312. The overall study of sca effects of different traits, in the present investigation reveals that sca effects of per se performance of the crosses were not closely related. The crosses with high per se performance need not be the one with high sca effects and vice versa. The reason ascribed is due to positive interaction between nuclear and cytoplasmic genes appear to be important than the interaction between nuclear genes alone. It is evident from the different studies, the predominance of non-additive gene action over the additive component, which is ideal for exploitation through heterosis breeding. Heterosis for grain yield per plant is mainly because of simultaneous manifestation of heterosis for yield component traits. Out of 32 hybrids studied, the significant standard heterosis was observed in 3 hybrids viz., CMS 59A x WGL 14 (54.89), CMS 23A x IET 26264 (46.60) and CMS 64A x WGL 14 (30.43) over standard hybrid check, US 312. From the blast screening experiments by UBN (Uniform Blast Nursery) method, it was found that four hybrids and three parents are resistant to screening reaction; 11 hybrids and five parents are moderately susceptible and four parents are highly susceptible to the blast disease. The parents which showed resistant reaction were JGL 180457, IET 26274 and JMS 13B which can be used as parents for development of blast resistant varieties and hybrids. JMS 13A x JGL 180457, CMS 23A x RNR 11450, JMS 13A x IET 26264 and JMS 13A x IET 26274. From this study, three hybrids viz., CMS 59A x WGL 14, CMS 64A x WGL 14 and CMS 23A x IET 26264 were identified as best hybrids with high significant standard heterosis for grain yield and yield contributing characters, high sca effects and moderate blast resistance. These hybrids are recommended for further testing over locations and seasons, for stable performance.en_US
