Abstract
More than half of the world's pesticides are used in Asia. India is the 12th largest
pesticide use in the world and the 3rd largest in Asia after China and Turkey. This
study collects, organizes, and summarizes various types of pesticides, patterns of
pesticide use, and detailed pesticide consumption data in India and around the planet.
India's agriculture has grown tremendously over the last few decades. Edible grain
production increased from 51 million tons (MT) in 1950 51 to 274 tons in 2019-20, the
highest since independence. Hence Rapid growth has helped India's agriculture claim
its presence on a global scale. India accounts for just 1% of global pesticide use. India
used around 58,160 tons of pesticides in 2018. In 2017, the pesticide application rate
was 0.31 kg per hectare. Despite the low use of pesticides per hectare in India, their
reckless use has left residues in both biotic and abiotic sections of the environment.
Not only has this led to commercialization and diversification, but investment in this
sector has led to a variety of technological and institutional innovations. Agriculture is
the most important profession for most Indian families. More than 60% of India's land
area is cultivated land, making it the second-largest country in terms of total cultivated
land. India's agriculture has grown tremendously over the last few decades. (Nayak,
