Abstract
Health is a vital indicator of human development. The present study was
conducted during the year 2010-2011 in Dharwad block of Karnataka state. Purposive
random sampling technique was used for selection of four blocks in Dharwad taluk
i.e. Garag, Mugad, Alnavar and Hebballi where the Primary Health Centres are
located. Random sampling procedure was used for selection of 210 respondents,
which includes 150 mothers of below poverty line, 30 community leaders and 30
block level health official. Cent per cent of the village women were aware of the facts
that all the village women preferred hospital delivery as it is very safe. The overall
opinion index of rural mothers towards selected health programmes was quiet high
that is 77.32 per cent. Mothers had appreciable knowledge about safe delivery in the
Government hospital. Cent per cent rural mothers have adopted immunization
schedule for children. Majority of the mothers are facing problems in Prasooti Araike
Programme (96.66%) which are benefits are limited only to 2 deliveries, incentives
and cheques are not given in time. While in Janani Suraksha Yojana mothers
suggested to provide well equipped labour room, timely monitoring and supervision
by the staff. Majority of the community leaders realized the problems like untimely
implementation of the programmes, not providing incentives at right time, no
improvement in the infrastructure of PHC, neglecting the patients by the staff, staff
coming late and going home early. Majority of the community leaders suggested to
give the madilu kit in time (96.00%). Cent per cent of the officials faced the problem
of lack of knowledge and awareness of rural people followed by beneficiaries who are
not having essential documents to claim the incentives of the programmes. Majority
of the health officials suggested (93.33%) to provide timely in-service trainings to
update their knowledge.
