A field experiment was conducted at the Instructional Farm, Department of Agronomy, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh during Rabi season of the year 2006-2007 to study the “Effect of clove weight and plant growth regulators on growth and yield of garlic cv. G.G.3”. The object of the experiment was to get the information on effect of clove weight and plant growth regulators on garlic cv. ‘G.G.3’ with respect to growth, bulb development and yield. The experiment consisting of twelve treatment combinations, comprising of four clove weight viz. > 1.5 g (C1), 1.0 to 1.5 g (C2), < 1.0 g (C3) and ungraded mixed lot (C4) and two levels of plant growth regulators viz. 50 ppm NAA (G1), 1000 ppm Cycocel (G2) with no growth regulator (G0) in a Factorial Randomized Block Design with three replications. Quantitative and qualitative parameters influenced by different seed cloves weight. Except for neck thickness, all other characters under study were significantly affected by clove weight. Maximum plant height (54.40 cm), number of leaves per plant (9.94), weight of biomass (7.17 Kg/plot), average weight of bulb (15.90 g), average weight of clove (0.89 g), polar diameter of bulb (2.98 cm), equatorial diameter of bulb (3.98 cm), number of cloves per bulb (23.08) and yield (5.19 Kg/plot and 11.37 t/ha) were recorded from the sowing of garlic with higher weighted cloves (> 1.5 g). Significantly highest total soluble solid content in bulbs (40.17 %) was recorded at highest weight of cloves i.e. > 1.5 g. Plant height was depressed under the treatment of Cycocel 1000 ppm (48.24 cm) than control (51.26 cm). Maximum plant height (53.33 cm) was recorded under the treatment 50 ppm NAA. While maximum number of leaves per plant (9.97), weight of biomass (7.30 Kg/plot), average weight of bulbs (15.55 g), average weight of cloves (0.86 g), polar diameter of bulb (2.94 cm), equatorial diameter of bulb (3.90 cm), number of cloves per bulb (22.56), neck thickness (0.48 cm) were recorded in 1000 ppm Cycocel. The maximum yield (5.12 Kg/plot and 11.22 t/ha) and total soluble solid (40.11 %) was observed in 1000 ppm Cycocel, which was significantly superior over control. Interaction effect of clove weight and plant growth regulators was found non-significant for all the characters under study.en_US
