Abstract
Investigations carried out on the population dynamics of fruit flies in mango orchard, species of fruit flies associated with mango in different agro-climatic regions of Karnataka and biology of Bactrocera dorsalis was undertaken at the Department of Agricultural Entomology, College of Agriculture, Main Agricultural Research Station (MARS), University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Raichur. Whereas the management of fruit flies by using STATIC-ME in mango orchard was conducted at Srinivasapura Taluk, Kolar district, Karnataka during 2013-15. In the population dynamics studies, at UAS Raichur campus, the trap catches of fruit flies was found to be highest during August month followed by July. All the weather parameters influenced the trap catches of fruit flies to an extent of 83.00 per cent. At Appanadoddi village, higher trap catches were recorded during June month. Weather parameters influenced the trap catches of fruit flies to an extent of 86.80 per cent. Trap catches showed a peak during September month at Basapattana village, Gangavathi taluk. Trap catches of fruit flies influenced by all the weather parameters to an extent of 70.20 per cent. Species of fruit flies from different agro-climatic zones of Karnataka revealed the presence of four species of fruit flies that are attracted to methyl eugenol viz., Bactrocera dorsalis, B. correcta, B. zonata and B. affinis. B. dorsalis was found to be the dominamt species. Biology of B. dorsalis revealed that, it completed egg, first instar, second instar, third instar and pupal period by 1.52±0.40, 2.12±0.43, 2.20±0.33, 4.22±0.32 and 11.22±0.46 days, respectively. Longevity of male and female was 87.83±5.66 and 104.12±7.05 days respectively. In the management of fruit flies studies, it revealed that STATIC-ME was the effective lure in attracting the male fruit flies and that gives a season long attraction of fruit flies up to 17 weeks under field conditions. Two traps with STATIC-ME per acre was found to be economical in attracting the fruit flies.
