Pineal gland acts as a neuroendocrine gland which secretes melatonin and other enzymes that helps to regulate the animal's circadian rhythm. The gland plays a major role in sexual development, hibernation, metabolism and seasonal breeding in animals (Trautmann and Josef Fiebtger 2002)
