Abstract
Agricultural Education is important equipment in ensuring increased
agricultural productivity, sustainability, environmental & ecological security,
profitability, job security and equity. Agricultural students must have practical
knowledge of agriculture with theoretical knowledge. The same was supported by
Randhawa Committee (1992) which suggested the Rural Agriculture Work
Experience (RAWE) programme to communicate quality, practical, and production oriented education for agriculture degree program. The World Bank (1975) stated that
there was little emphasis on curricula for preparing agricultural graduates for better
careers in agriculture or agri-business outside Govt. jobs. As a result, the objectives
for agricultural education in the 21st Century should be developed with consideration
of the approaching issues. RAWE programme gives significant hands-on experience
in acquiring knowledge and skill. It is a program for imparting quality, practical and
production-oriented education for agriculture students.
The present Research entitled “Utility Perception of Students towards Rural
Awareness Work Experience Programme in Agriculture University, Jodhpur” was
conducted to document the profile of RAWE students, to assess the utility perception
of students towards RAWE programme and to find out the relationship between
profile of students and utility perception of students towards RAWE programme. The
current study also gave opportunity to the students for giving the suggestions related
to RAWE programme.
The current study was conducted in three constituted Colleges of Agriculture
University, Jodhpur namely, College of Agriculture, Jodhpur, Sumerpur and Nagaur
with sample size of 165 B.Sc. (Ag.) final year students. The respondents were
personally interviewed by a well-organized interview schedule. The data were
collected, tabulated, and interpreted using suitable statistical tools.
The profile of the students revealed that most of the students were male,
majority of respondents were from rural areas, majority of the respondent’s academic
performance ranged from 7.01-8.00 OGPA. Majority of respondent’s parent had
secondary and senior secondary education and were engaged in agriculture and
majority of respondents had medium level of family income. The study revealed that
majority of respondents had moderate level of leadership quality, achievement
motivation, extension contact and mass media use during the whole period of RAWE
programme.
The investigation also found that majority of respondents had medium level of
utility perception in gaining knowledge on communication skills, crop production and
protection practices, socio-economic aspects and agricultural extension activity during
the whole RAWE programme.
The leadership quality, achievement motivation, extension contact and mass
media use were positively and highly significantly with utility perception of students
towards RAWE program. The variable, academic performance of the students had
positive and significant relationship with utility perception. However, variables viz.
gender, family background, parent’s education, parent’s occupation and family
income had non-significant relationship with utility perception of students towards
RAWE programme. .
All respondents suggested that the farmer who have more than two crops in a
particular season should be allotted to the students, 93.94 per cents of respondents
suggested that allotted farmers should be innovative so that students can get better
understanding and 84.85 per cent of students suggested that the respondents should
stay with farmer near the farmer's house instead of KVK and got 1st, 2nd and 3rd rank
respectively.
