Abstract
The present investigation was conducted at Model Floriculture Centre of the University, during 2021-22 and 2022-23. The experiment was laid out to study the effect of different doses of gamma rays (1.5 - 4.0 Kr) in tuberose varieties, Suvasini and Prajwal to isolate and evaluate desirable mutants in vM1 & vM2 generations along with survey at producer, consumer, and florist levels for requirement/acceptability of newer traits through questionnaire. The bulbs of uniform size were treated with six doses of gamma rays along with one untreated control. The study revealed that vegetative characters like days taken to 50 percent sprouting, plant survival percentage, plant height, number of leaves per plant, length, and width of longest leaf as well as number of tillers per plant decreased with increase in the doses of gamma rays. No bulb sprouting was recorded at 3.5 Kr dose of gamma radiations in Suvasini (V1) and with 4.0 Kr in Prajwal (V2) however, very less sprouting (5%) was observed in both the varieties at doses beyond 3.0 Kr. Moreover, early spike emergence and first floret opening, length of spike, rachis length, and number of opened florets were recorded maximum at 2.0 Kr dose of gamma rays. The number of florets per spike, number of unopened florets and blooming duration was maximum at 2.5 Kr. However, the size and length of basal florets along with days to full bloom, was highest at 3.5 Kr. gamma doses. Among yield parameters the number of bulbs and bulblets per plant was noted maximum at 2.0 Kr of gamma radiation. while at 2.5 Kr dose of radiation diameter of the bulb, weight of largest bulb and weight of bulblets per clump was recorded highest. The study revealed that consumers had choice for tuberose varieties with novel traits of the spike, flower and other marketable characters and promoting tuberose market which can be attained with 2.0 Kr and 2.5 Kr gamma radiation exposures as these doses had stimulating effect for obtaining desirable marketable characters viz. number of tillers, early spike initiation, rachis length and for all yield parameters of tuberose bulbs.
