Abstract
The present study “Evaluation of various combinations of potting media on the growth of
ornamental plants in outdoor vertical gardening” was carried out at Experimental area of
Landscape Nursery, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, Punjab Agricultural
University, Ludhiana during June 2019-2020 to workout best combinations of potting media
for the growth of Syngonium podophyllum, Dracaena compacta (Red), Kalanchoe
blossfeldiana, Dracaena reflexa and Pedilanthus tithymaloides by using the following
treatments, T1: Soil + FYM + Cocopeat (50:25:25), T2: Soil + FYM + Cocopeat (25:50:25),
T3: Soil + FYM + Cocopeat (25:25:50), T4: Soil + Vermicompost + Cocopeat (25:50:25) and
T5/Control: Soil + FYM (50:50). Each treatment contained 15 plants replicated thrice under
the Completely Randomized Block Design. The result of the experiment showed that T4: Soil
+ Vermicompost + Cocopeat (25:50:25) proved to be the best for improvement of vegetative
parameters, enhancing the leaf nutrient content, rooting parameters, and also the attractive
foliage of the selected ornamental plants. The minimum value of all the observations recorded
was found to be in T5/Control: Soil + FYM (50:50). Thus the present investigation revealed
that among all the treatments used, T4: Soil + Vermicompost + Cocopeat (25:50:25) was
found more effective which may be due to the more nutrient content of the vermicompost as
compared to all other growing media used in the experiment.
