Abstract
Adolescence is a period of transition from a relatively dependent
childhood to the Psychological, social and economic self-sufficiency of
adulthood. During this period discipline is a very important instrument in the
process of socialization in which parents guide the child in direction of what
is socially and culturally acceptable. Diana Baumrind (1983) has classified the
techniques of disciplining/parenting in a three-fold scheme and research
focused on three of them 1) Authoritarian 2) Democratic 3) Permissive
Parents occupy the most important place in the perceptual world of the child.
The impact of parenting styles on personality development of
adolescents result in following characteristics of authoritarian parenting is
found to be associated with low self-esteem and external locus of control.
Democratic reciprocal pattern of parenting is associated with personality
characteristics of children such as aggressive, impulsive and lacking
independence in the ability to take responsibility. Hence the present study
entitled “Effect of parenting styles on personality development of adolescent”
was undertaken to identify the parenting styles adopted by the parents,
perceptions of adolescents on their parents parenting styles and personality

study different parenting styles as perceived by the adolescents. To study the
different parenting styles adopted by the parents towards their children. To
study the relationship between the perceived parenting styles of adolescents
and their personality development. To study the relationship between the
parenting styles adopted by the parents and their children’s personality
development. To study the gender differences in personality development of
adolescents.
The sample consisted of 360 respondents adolescent boys and girls 90
each from the age group of 14-15 years and one of their parents totaling to 180
who were randomly drawn from the schools of Hyderabad. The parenting
interactional style questionnaire (PISQ) was used to study the parenting styles
adopted by the parents and modified questionnaire was used to study the
perceptions of adolescents on their parents parenting styles. MAP series form-
T was used to study the personality development of adolescents. Data was
collected by giving questionnaire to adolescents and their parents. The
obtained data was coded, scored, tabulated and analyzed using appropriate
statistical measures.
The major findings of the study are as follows Majority of the
adolescents were in the age group of 15 years and majority of them were
studying 9th Class. Majority of the parents were educated both mothers and
fathers. In total fathers and 56 percent of the mothers were working in
government and private sectors few of them were involved in business and
professional jobs. Majority of the adolescents were from nuclear families.
With regard to parenting styles adopted by the parents majority of the parents
had adopted democratic parenting style and it was followed by permissive
and authoritarian parenting styles. With regard to perceptions of the
adolescents majority of them had perceived authoritarian parenting styles and
it was followed by democratic and permissive parenting style. Majority of the
adolescents were in average and high categories with regard to almost all the
dimensions of personality development.
Democratic parenting style was positively and significantly related to
personality development of adolescents and it is followed by permissive
parenting style. Authoritarian parenting style was negatively but not
significantly related to personality development of adolescents. Adolescents
belonging to democratic styles had better personality development and it is
followed by permissive and authoritarian parenting styles. Adolescents
belonging to authoritarian parenting style had lowest mean scores in almost
all the dimensions compared to adolescents from democratic and permissive
parenting styles. Strong determinants of personality development of
adolescents belonging to authoritarian parenting style are education,
occupation of the mother and father and income of the mother where as for
adolescents belonging to permissive parents were sex of the child, education
and occupation of the mother and type of the family are strong determinants.
Strong determinants of adolescents belonging to authoritarian parents were
occupation of the mother and sex of the child. Boys of all the parenting styles
had better personality development compared to those of the girls, boys and
high scores in almost all the dimensions of personality development such as
academic achievement, competition, creativity, boldness, individualism,
general ability, innovation, self-control, self-sufficiency and mental health.
Girls of all parenting styles had high mean scores with regard to few
dimensions such as maturity, morality, social warmth and tension.
