Abstract
Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important vegetable cum spice crop, grown extensively in different parts of India. It occupies an important place in the Indian diet. Chilli has also acquired a great importance in food and beverage industries in the form of oleoresins, which permits better distribution of colour and flavour in food as compared to chilli powder. The traditional method of seed separation/extraction from dry red chilli fruits involves various operations like harvesting, sun drying, beating and winnowing. These operations were carried out manually, it takes more time and seed obtained by this method is of poor quality. Presently no appropriate mechanism is available with the farmers for extraction of seeds from wet chillies. Farmer’s traditional practice by using locally made mechanisms for wet chilli seed extraction leads to the damage to the seeds as well as the reduction in quality of seeds in terms of germination and viability per cent. Keeping in view of the above facts, wet red chilli seed extractor was designed, developed and evaluated for performance. The major components of the machine include main frame, feed hopper, seed extraction unit and power transmission system. The machine is powered by three horse-power, three phase electric motor. The performance of the machine was evaluated for chilli seed extraction at five feed rates (100, 159, 300, 441 and 500 kg/h) and five drum speeds (600, 688, 900, 1112 and 1200 rpm), respectively. The response parameters investigated were extraction efficiency, seed loss and germination per cent. Two variable, five level Central Composite Rotatable model of response surface methodology by using Design Expert Software was used to optimize machine parameter for maximum extraction efficiency, minimum seed loss and maximum germination percentage. The average weight of pod, number of seeds per pod, husk to seed ratio and thousand seed weight were found to be 12.52 g, 84.60, 12.65 and 7.35 g, respectively. The average size, geometric mean diameter, sphericity, bulk density, true density, porosity, angle of repose and coefficient of static friction of chilli pod were found to be 72.32 mm, 17.87 mm, 17.36 mm, 28.12 mm, 0.39 per cent, 317.18 kg/m3, 701.22 kg/m3, 54.74 per cent, 36.71o and 0.26, respectively. The physical properties of seeds such as size, geometric mean diameter, sphericity, bulk density, true density, porosity, angle of repose and coefficient of static friction were found to be 4.28 mm, 3.45 mm, 0.92 mm, 2.38 mm, 0.56 per cent, 470 kg/m3, 1100 kg/m3, 56.63 per cent, 28.0o and 0.73, respectively. The operational parameters of wet red chilli seed extractor namely, feed rate 300 kg/h and drum speed 850 rpm were found optimum for maximum extraction efficiency (97.51 %), minimum seed loss (0.24 %) and maximum germination (94.77 %).
