Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to estimate phenotypic variability,
character association and path coefficient analysis among 15 germplasm of Indian beans
for yield per vine and its contributing characters. Uniform 15 germplasm were selected in
5 villages. Analysis of variance indicated presence of considerable variability for all the
14 characters.
High GCV and PCV were recorded for average pod weight, leaf area and yield
per vine. High estimates of heritability along with high genetic advance as per cent of
mean were observed for width of pod and yield per vine. Therefore, these characters can
add in selection programme. The result from character association indicated that yield per
vine had significant and positive correlation with number of branches per vine, average
pod weight, seed index and number of pods per vine at both the levels. Path coefficient
analysis revealed that characters viz., number of pods per vine, seed index, pod width,
vine length, mean pod weight, fruit set, stem diameter and number of flowers per cluster
had positive direct effect on yield per vine. Number of pods per vine, average pod weight,
seed index, pod width and vine length showed high and positive indirect effect towards
yield per vine.
On the basis of mean performance the genotypes G14, G8 and G2 were found
superior to the high mean values of yield per vine. These germplasm may further be
utilized in breeding programme aimed at improving pod yield per vine in Indian bean.
Result obtained from the present study based on variability parameters,
correlation and path analysis revealed that selection programme based on number of pods
per vine, seed index, pod width, pod length, mean pod weight, fruit set, stem diameter,
leaf area, number of flowers per cluster and seeds per pod prove effective in enhancing
productivity level in Indian bean.
