Abstract
The investigation entitled “Level of self-incompatibility and inbreeding depression in tropical cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis)” was carried out with the following objectives : (i) To study seed set under different modes of pollination. (ii) To estimate self-incompatibility within cultivar. (iii) To study inbreeding depression in S1 over open and sib-pollinated progenies. The field experiment was conducted at Vegetable Research Centre, Pantnagar. The tropical cauliflower variety Pant Shubhra was subjected to open, bud and natural self pollination during autumn-winter 2002 – 2003. The progenies were evaluated during autumn-winter 2003 – 2004 in a Randomized Block Design with two replications. The ANOVA revealed significant differences between mean performance of open and bud pollinated progenies for all the characters. The mean performance of open pollinated progenies was 374.71 g net curd weight in comparison to 297.67 g in inbred progenies. Based on the findings of the present investigation, the average self-incompatibility was found tobe approximately 80 per cent in Pant Shubhra. The PS-74-I1 inbred line was found tobe the best line for most of the characters i.e. stalk length, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, equatorial diameter of curd, polar diameter of curd with minimum inbreeding depression. Inbred lines PS-89-I1 and PS-56-I1 were found tobe the best for early curd maturity and net curd weight respectively. From the above study, it was concluded that the inbred line PS-74-I1 was self-incompatible and proved tobe the best parental line showing minimum inbreeding depression for most of the characters.
