Abstract
The study was conducted in rural and urban areas of district Hisar.Two villages namely
Kamari and Mangali were takenas rural location and for urban the Hisar city was selected for
collection of data. A total number of 240 children of age group of 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 years were taken, out of
which 120 children were from urban and 120 form rural areas. McCarthy scale of cognitive ability by
McCarthy (1970) was used to test the cognitive level of children. Socioeconomic status was assessed
with self structured interview schedule. Home inventory by Bradley and Caldwell (1984) was used to
judge the environmental conditions of children in their home. Results revealed that children had
increasing trend for all aspects of learning competency with increase in their age. Comparison over
location shown that urban children surpassed their counterpart in all aspects of learning competency.
Association of learning with socioeconomic factors depicted the influence on general cognitive index
as well as it all aspects in both locations. The study further revealed that aspects of home environment
such as learning stimulation language and physical stimulation and acceptance were significantly
associated with intellectual abilities of urban children. The total home environment was also found as
significantly effective variable for intellectual abilities of rural children.
