Abstract
The present study was undertaken to assess the development of boys and girls of employed and non-employed mothers residing in extended families. A representative sample of 480 children between 9-12 years of age from co-educational schools of Udaipur city were selected. 240 children (120 boys and 120 girls) of employed mothers and 240 children (120 boys and 120 girls) of non-employed mothers residing in extended families were selected. Further 30 boys and 30 girls were selected from children living with employed mothers belonging to the chronological age i.e. 9,10,11,12 years and 30 boys and 30 girls were selected from children living with non-employed mothers from the same age group. Four major tools were used for data collection i.e. social maturity inventory, emotional maturity inventory, multi-dimensional assessment of personality and achievement orientation inventory. The data obtained were analyzed in the light of the objectives set for the present investigation. Frequency percentages were calculated for assessing the development of boys and girls of employed and non-employed mothers residing in extended families. ANOVA was computed to find out the age and gender difference of boys and girls of employed and non-employed mothers on the selected developmental aspects. On the basis of the results guidelines were prepared for parents and grandparents for optimizing social maturity, emotional maturity, personality and achievement orientation in children. Major findings of the study are as follows: (1) Overall social maturity of boys of non-employed mothers was higher than boys of employed mothers, and overall social maturity of girls of employed mothers was higher than girls of non-employed mothers. Statistically age and gender difference was found between the boys and girls of both employed and non-employed mothers. (2) Both boys and girls of non-employed mothers reported higher emotional maturity than boys and girls of employed mothers. No gender difference was found between the boys and girls of employed and non-employed mothers and similarly no discrepancy was reported for age difference between the boys and girls of employed and non-employed mothers. (3) Higher percentage of boys of non-employed had better personality than boys of employed mothers while girls of employed mothers had better personality than girls of non-employed mothers. No gender and age difference was put forth between the boys and girls of employed and non-employed mothers. (4) Achievement orientation of both boys and girls of employed mothers was higher than the achievement orientation of boys and girls of non-employed mothers. Statistically gender and age difference was also reported between the boys and girls of employed and non-employed mothers.
