Abstract
"The study was conducted to assess the knowledge and adoption of
production and post harvest technology in tomato by farmers of Belgaum
district in North Karnataka during the year 2003-04. One hundred and
twenty tomato growers formed the sample for the study. A pre-tested
structured interview schedule was used to collect the information through
personal interview. The data was analysed by using frequency, percentage
and correlation.
The findings of the study revealed that major portion of the tomato
growers (49.17%) had medium level of knowledge of production practices
followed by high (27.50%) and low (23.33%) levels. High majority of farmers
were aware of the post harvest practices like sorting and transportation. The
knwoledge regarding processing of tomato was held by mere 55 per cent
farmers. A very high majority of farmers (93.33%) used hybrid seeds
compared to the varieties. The adoption of chemical fertilizers was observed
to be inline with recommended dosage. Majority of the respondents used
NSKE 5%, while 67.50 per cent used endosulfan for control of leaf minor.
Staking was practiced by 80 per cent of the respondents. The post harvest
practices grading and processing were least adopted by tomato growers.
The overall post harvest loss as perceived by farmers was to the tune
of 21.20 kg per quintal of tomato.
The perceived post-harvest loss was maximum at farm level followed
by market level and consumer level. Lack of technical knowledge and
guidance about improved cultivation practices and post harvest technology,
high transportation cost and high cost of pesticides and other inputs were
the problems associated with the adoption of production and post harvest
technology by tomato growers."
