Abstract
The investigations on “Characterization of pear varieties recommended for Punjab” was carried out at New Orchard, Department of Horticulture, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during the year 2007, 2008. Five cultivars recommended for Punjab namely Patharnakh, Punjab Gold, Punjab Nectar, Punjab Beauty and Punjab Soft were studied. The varietal characterization of pear varieties was carried on four tree characters, 13 vegetative characters, 18 reproductive characters and 19 fruit characters. Among different pear varieties only tree spread differed significantly with maximum in Patharnakh, followed by Punjab Gold, Punjab Nectar, Punjab Beauty and Punjab Soft. Ten vegetative characters out of 13 were found to differ significantly with maximum leaf size in Patharnakh and minimum in variety Punjab Soft. Among 18 reproductive characters, number of flowers/inflorescence, flower size, flower stalk length, petal size, fruit set were found to differ significantly. Amongst 19 fruit characters number of fruits/spur, fruit size, fruit weight, pedicel length, fruit firmness, pulp juiciness, number of seeds/fruit, seed size, seed weight, number of lenticels/cm2, yield, TSS, acidity, TSS:acid ratio, starch, total sugars and starch/sugars ration were found to differ significantly. The data is discussed in the light of relevant literature available on the subject. A key to identify different varieties is also provided.
