Plant growth promoting traits of endophytic actinomycetes from Aegle marmelos, Murraya koenigii and Syzygium cumini

Abstract
The present investigation was undertaken to study plant growth promoting traits of endophytic actinomycetes, a total of 125 isolates from medicinal plants were studied comprising, Aegle marmelos (60), Murraya koenigii (35) and Syzygium cumini (30). All the isolates of endophytic actinomycetes was functionally characterized on the basis of IAA, siderophore, gibberellic acid and ammonia production, ACC deaminase activity and phosphate solubilization. Among the isolates, maximum IAA production was reported by isolate MK 10 (83.66 ± 0.1µg/ml). Isolate SC1 showed maximum phosphate solubilization which was (49.78 ± 0.1mg/100ml). Isolate MK 10 exhibited maximum hydroxamate type of siderophore (123.34 ± 0.1µg/ml) and maximum catechol type of siderophore production was observed by isolate SC 1 (83.00 ± 0.2 µg/ml). Maximum gibberellic acid production was reported in SC1 isolate (44.56 ± 0.2µg/ml). Forty one isolates were found to produce ammonia, twelve were from A marmelos, 12 from M koenigii and 17 from S cumini. Only five isolates exhibited ACC deaminase activity. Thirty eight were displaying antagonistic activity against Fusarium oxysporum, F. moniliforme, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium sp. isolate SC1 and MK 10 were showed antagonistic activity against all tested fungal culture. Isolate SC1 and MK 10 were selected based on best PGP traits for pot experiment. Application of endophytic actinomycete isolates resulted in enhanced shoot, root length, shoot and root dry weight, flowering time, number of fruits of tomato. The percent increase in economic yield of tomato was found to be highest in SC1+MK 10 (65.78%) as compared to control. Thus, the present study revealed the potential of endophytic actinomycetes as plant growth promoting and biocontrol agents.
