Abstract
“Post-harvest loss” in the PHL system refers to the quantitative and qualitative loss of food in various post-harvest operations.The major oilseeds of India are groundnut, rape seed mustard, linseed, sesame and castor. India is one of the major oilseeds grower and importer of edible oils. India’s oil economy is world’s fourth largest after USA, China & Brazil. The oilseed accounts for 13% of the Gross Cropped Area, 3% of the Gross National Product and 10% value of all agricultural commodities. This sector has recorded annual growth rate of area, production and yield @ 2.44%, 5.47% and 2.96% respectively during last decade (1999-2009).FAO have reported the postharvest losses of more than 42% at a global level due to physical, mechanical, and biological factors. Oilseeds production in India are about 30 million tonnes and estimated losses is about 6 per cent during various handling operations like in harvesting is 1.85 per cent, in collection 0.54 per cent, in threshing 0.78 per cent and 0.19, 0.18, 0.14 per cent in winnowing, drying , packaging respectively. The present study was done in an attempt to know about the growth rate of mustard and the cost and returns. Also the study focuses on the various losses incurred in mustard during various post harvest operations along with the managerial factors responsible for post harvest losses at farm level. The study was conducted purposively in Jammu district as the highest area under mustard cultivation. Two blocks were selected purposely in Jammu district as highest block cultivating mustard, further each block was randomly selected with two villages and thus the sample size was 80. Primarydatawascollectedwiththehelpof schedulebyusingpersonalinterviewmethod. The results show that the overall compound rate in Jammu region and Jammu district tends increasing. On an average per ha the cost of cultivation and gross returns were to be found more in BhalwalBhramana block then in Akhnoor block. Also the maximum post harvest losses were seen in drying operations i.e. about 64 per cent followed by harvesting loss,threshing loss, storage loss, winnowing loss and transportation loss.The study also reveal that there are various factors like area under mustard, weather, storage, timely availability of labour which are contributing significantly for the post harvest losses and Several other factors like education of farmer, age of the respondent were also found which are contributing insignificantly and are inversely associated with the independent variable i.e. yield.
