Abstract
A f ield exper ime nt was conducted to study the persiste nce behaviour in tomato and soil
underneath and ef fect of processing o n the reduction of residues of ready - mix insecticide in tomato
f ruits . A laboratory exper ime nt was pe r fomed for assessing the leac hing potential of ready -mix
insecticide at two doses in soil (sandy loam) and leachate f ractions . ready -mix 505
(50%chlorpy r iphos+5%cy permethr in) insecticide at single and double doses of 800 and 1600 g ha

was sprayed in the Vegetable Research Farm of Chaudhary Charan Singh (CCS) Hary ana Agr icultural
University (HAU), Hisar o n tomato crop (Variety , Hisar Shakti 102) at f ruiting stage. Samples of
tomato f ruits and soil were collected per iodically on 0 (1h) , 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 day s a f ter treatme nts.
In leaching expe r iment, ready -mix insecticide was applied as 25Ïg (s ingle dose) and 50 Ïg (double
dose) in dif ferent soils packed in plexi glass columns. Residues were estimated by gas chromatograph
equipped with capillary column and electron capture detector (ECD). Per cent recover ies at the

tomato f ruits. Was hing followed by boiling was found mo re ef fective in reducing the residues f rom

crop, half -life per iod was found to be in the range of 2.37 to 3.25 day s at single and double dose in all
the treatme nts following f irst orde r kinetics. A leac hing exper ime nt was carr ied out unde r laborato ry
conditio ns. The residues of chlorpy r iphos were retained up to 30-35cm soil core whereas residues of
cy permethrin retained more than 90 pe r cent in 0-10cm soil core showing their immobility in soil. As
residues of chlorpy r iphos and cy permethrin were not detected in any of the leac hate f ractions of soil
and doses, he nce safe for ground water.
