An economic analysis of input use in wheat crop in Haryana

Abstract
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the most important cereal crop for the majority of world’s populations. The present study has made an attempt to analyze the cost structure of wheat cultivation/production adopting the production system analysis approach in the state with these objectives, (1) to study the input use pattern in wheat crop (2) to work out the economics of wheat crop in Haryana (3) to identify the constraints faced by farmers in input use in the state. Present study was based on secondary data collected under the comprehensive scheme to study the cost of cultivation of wheat crop of Haryana state from three different climatic zones ( dry zone, semi irrigated zone, irrigated zone) of the state. The average quantities of the inputs, seed, irrigation, nitrogen, phosphorus, zinc sulphate, FYM, herbicides, insecticides and pesticides in the state were 113.47 kg/ha, 5/ha, 143.67 kg/ha, 57.25 kg/ha, 14.03 kg/ha, 18.78 q/ha, 0.54 kg/ha, 159.99 g/ha, 281.22 g/ha. The average overall yield of the state was 45.61 q/ha. It was highest on large size farms and lowest on small size farms. On an average net return per hectare for all the three zones were ` 23722, 23121 and 24328 respectively. The average net return per hectare of the state was ` 23723. The average cost of production per quintal of wheat for the state was about ` 1318 which was lower than the market price of wheat ranging from ` 1400 to 1550/qtl. The main constraints faced by the farmers in the state in input use was nonavailability of irrigation facilities and non-availability of funds.The results had suggested that limited required inputs with a reasonable and subsidized prices as well as intensive role of extention are urgently needed to help farmers to trace the recommended package. The encouragement policies can imply reducing the cost of production or by incentive, the wheat growers of the scheme can buy their product at satisfying prices. As irrigation is the main constraint faced by farmers, intervention is needed to ease in having this input either by subsidizing it or providing means of credit to enable farmers to keep their pumps working.
