Abstract
Problem like swelling and shrinkage is observed commonly in clayey soil. In order to improve such soil and make them suitable for geotechnical engineering consideration, various additive materials were considered. From literature it was found that various additives such as cement, lime fly ash and rice husk ash etc. have been considered to improve the geotechnical characteristics of soil. In this research work, effect of conventional (lime) and non-conventional (silica fume) additive are used to improve the geotechnical properties of soil. The sample of soil was collected from the fields of Sitarganj, U.S. Nagar (Uttarakhand). The lime was procured from local market of Pantnagar. The lime was used in the proportion of 3%, 6%, 9%, &12%. Elkem micro silica Grade 920-D obtained from Elkem India Pvt. Limited has been used. The SF was used in the proportion of 5%, 10%, &15% for this study. Initially the geotechnical properties of soil were studied by conducting laboratory tests. After that soil mixed with three different percentages of Silica Fume i.e. 5%, 10% and 15% and four different percentages of Lime i.e., 3 %, 6%, 9%, and 12% and four different percentages of silica fume-lime i.e., 17-3%, 14-6%, 11-9% and 8-12% were subjected to various laboratory like CBR, Tri- axial tests etc. For SF and lime mix with soil the optimum percentage was at 14% SF+6% lime.
