Abstract
ABSTRACT Tropical tree agarwood (Aquilaria agallocha L.) is the principal source of agar which is one of the most valuable forest products traded internationally. Although this species is the focus of increasing conservation concern, information on their growth, proper management techniques and nutrient requirements are lacking. Keeping in view the importance of this species, drastic decline in natural population, biological conservation and for the success of commercial plantations, a field experiment was conducted to find out suitable combination of nutrients for early growth of agarwood plantations at farmer’s field, Koppa village of Sirsi taluk during 2014-2015. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design comprising ten treatments and each treatment was replicated thrice. The treatments included nutrients in the form of organic, inorganic and bio-fertilizers. Among all the treatments the treatment comprises FYM (2 Kg/tree), VAM (100 g/tree), PSB (50 g/tree) and Azospirillum (50 g/tree) showed best performance recording highest tree height, DBH, tree basal area and tree volume i.e., 4.11 m, 4.52 cm, 16.17 cm2 and 6227.90 cm3 respectively at the end of 9 MAT. The lowest among all the growth parameters was recorded in control (T1). Soil pH varied within the range of 5.99 to 6.23, electrical conductivity within 0.2 to 0.48 ds/m, organic carbon in the range of 0.42 to 0.73 per cent; whereas available nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium ranged from with 225-383 Kg/ha, 37.16-44.44 Kg/ha and 144.33-242 Kg/ha respectively among the different nutrient treatments.
