Abstract
The object; of present experiment was to study the effect of planting dates and IBA levels on rooting of stem cuttings of drumstick cv. 'PKM-1'. The experiment was conducted at Horticultural Research Farm (Fruit Nursery), Department of Horticulture, B. A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Anand during the year 2003. The experiment was taken in permanent nursery bed. The rooting media was prepared with the mixture of 2 parts of soil, 1 part of sand and 1 part of compost. The experiment was laid out in Complete Randomized Design with three replications. The treatment were comprised of three planting dates (15th April, 15th May,and 15th June) and five levels of IBA (0, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 mg/litre IBA) making total 15 treatment combinations. All the characters under study showed significant variation due to different planting dates. The planting date D2 (15th May) recorded highest number of sprouted cuttings (1.85) at 45 DAP while the planting date D3 (15th June) recorded maximum number of sprouted cutting (2.48) at 30 DAP followed by planting date D2 (2.12). The planting date D2 (15th May) recorded maximum number of sprouts per cutting at 30 and 45 DAP (2.01 and 2.21). The planting date D2 (15th May) recorded highest shoot length (28.19 cm), maximum number of leaflets (128.70), highest number of primary roots (9.04), maximum number of secondary roots (11.85), highest length of primary roots (7.71 cm), maximum sprouting percentage (5.00), highest survival percentage (4.14) and maximum dry matter production (5.56 g). The characters under study of IBA levels, treatment showed significant variation due to different levels of IBA, except in number of sprouted cutting at 30 DAP. Maximum number of sprouted cuttings (1.97) recorded by the treatment T3 (2,000 mg/litre IBA) at 45 DAP. The highest number of sprouts per cutting (2.00) was recorded by treatment T4 (3,000 mg/litre IBA) at 30 DAP which was at par with treatment T3 (2,000 mg/litre IBA). In case of 45 DAP, the treatment T3 (2,000 mg/litre IBA) recorded maximum number of sprouts per cutting (2.14). The highest shoot length (26.83 cm) was recorded by the treatment T2 (1,000 mg/litre IBA) followed by treatment T3 (2,000 mg/litre IBA) i.e. 24.96 cm. Similarly, the treatment T3 (2,000 mg/litre IBA) recorded maximum number of leaflets per cutting (123.91), highest number of primary roots per cutting (8.25), maximum number of secondary roots per cutting (11.25), highest length of primary roots (5.74 cm) per cutting, maximum sprouting percentage (5.45), highest survival percentage (4.60) and maximum dry matter production (5.55 g). The interaction effect of different planting dates and IBA levels (DxT) were found significant for number of sprouts per cutting at 45 DAP, number of leaflets, number of primary roots, number of secondary roots, length of primary roots and dry matter production. Maximum number of sprouts per cutting was found in treatment combination D1T3(2.48) at 45 DAP, which was at par with D2T5 (2.43), D2T4 (2.33), D2T2 (2.20), D2T3 (2.16) and DJ4 (2.13). The treatment combination D2T3 recorded highest number of leaflets (230.33), maximum number of primary roots (12.25), highest length of primary roots (10.58 cm) and maximum dry matter production (6.04 g). The highest number of secondary roots per cutting was recorded by treatment combination D2T2 (14.16) followed by D2T5 (13.95), D2T3 (13.85) and D2T4 (12.33), respectively. For other characters like number of sprouted cuttings at 30 and 45 DAP, shoot length, sprouting and survival percentage found non-significant. Thus, from the results it can be concluded that planting date D2 (15th May) gave significantly best result in all rooting parameters except for number of sprouted cutting at 30 DAP. The different levels of IBA treatment, treatment T3 (2,000 mg/litre IBA) gave best result in all rooting parameters. The interaction effect between planting dates and different levels of IBA, treatment combination D2T3 gave best result. The present study indicated that the stem cuttings of drumstick cv. 'PKM-1' treated with IBA @ 2,000 mg/litre and planted on 15th May is the most effective combination for inducing maximum rooting and survival percentage.
