Abstract
The present research work entitled “Therapeutic management of nonregenerative anemia in canines” was carried out at Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Ethics and Jurisprudence of Bombay Veterinary College, Parel, Mumbai on 30 clinical cases of dogs brought to the Bai Sakarabai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals (BSDPHA) and Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC). Total 30 dogs were selected in present studies having Hemoglobin count less than 7.00 g/dl and/or packed cell volume < 22.5% and Total Reticulocyte count less than 60000/μl i.e. having Non-regenerative anemia. The cases were randomly distributed in three groups as Group A were treated conventionally with only Hematinics; Group B with Hematinics and Darbepoietin (0.45μg/kg SC weekly) and Group C with Hematinics and Nandrolone Decanoate(1mg/kg weekly). Hematinics included were the Inj. Iron dextran and oral hematinic preparation. The dogs in all the three groups received supportive treatment in the form of parenteral preparations of multivitamins and amino acids and needful treatment with respect to clinical condition. According to clinical diagnosis all the three groups were again classified as A-1, B-1, C-1 which includes cases of nonregenerative anemia due to renal failure and A-2, B-2, C-2 which in includes cases of non-regenerative anemia due to other causes than renal failure. Further, all dogs were subjected to clinical and Hematobiochemical parameters. Clinical signs of nonregenerative anemia in canines improved treated by Darbepoietin followed by Nandrolone decanoate while least improved with conventional treatment. Hemoglobin of the dogs of Group A-1,B-1 C-1 on 0th day was 6.61 ± 0.28 g%, 5.07 ± 0.4 g% and6.20 ± 0.33 g% which became to 4.91 ± 0.31 g%,6.57 ± 0.54 g% and6.01 ± 0.48 g% respectively14th day after treatment. The Total Reticulocyte Count of the dogs of this group on 0th day 15941.43 ± 1042.84/μl, 15828.57 ± 2500.55 /μl and 14500 ± 1536.78 /μl which became 12988.57± 1010.70 /μl, 153794.29 ± 8238.99 /μland 39367.14 ± 3224.84 /μl respectively on 14th day after treatment. Blood analysis of the dogs of Group A-2,B-2 and C-2 on 0th day revealed Hb of 5.00 ± 0.48 g%, 4.13 ± 0.84 g% and 5.23± 0.78 g% became 5.90 ± 1.04 g%, 6.37 ± 0.59 g% and 6.20 ± 1.01 g%14th day after treatment while. The Total Reticulocyte Count of the dogs of this group on 0th day was 17426.67± 4439.97 /μl, 9686.67 ± 1127.24 /μland 22423.33 ± 5065.82 /μl which became and 52106.67 ± 13582.07 /μl, 257566.67 ± 67040.94 /μl and65443.33 ± 25990.03 /μl on 14th day after treatment. From above study it was observed that Darbepoietin treatment to Group B-1 and B-2 increased the Total Reticulocyte count increased to 9.72 fold and 26.59 fold respectively. Nandrolone Decanoate treatment to Group C-1 and C-2 by 2.72 fold and 2.91 fold respectively, while that decreased in Group A-1 to 0.81 fold and increased in A-2 by 2.99 fold. From the present study it may be concluded that response of regeneration of RBCs is higher in canines treated by Darbepoietin followed by Nandrolone decanoate and least with the cases treated only with iron supplement.
