Optimization of Potassium (K) supply and plant nutrition through different K management practices under rice-rice system in Odisha

Abstract
Under the IRRI-OUAT Collaborative Students’ Research Programme, a field experiment was conducted with rice crop (cv: Lalat) grown on an acidic medium land located in the Central Research Farm of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar during two seasons, Rabi (2013-14) and Kharif (2014) in order to investigate the effect of different Potassium management practices on crop yield and Potassium availability in soil, potassium uptake and disease and insect incidence. The experiment was laid out in RBD with three replications and nine treatments consisting of T 1 : 40 kg K 2 O ha -1 , T , T 3 : 80 kg K +straw, T 7 2 O ha -1 : straw,T , T 8 4 : 20 kg K : 40 kg K 2 2 O ha O ha -1 -1 + straw, T + 1% KNO 5 3 : 30 kg K 2 O ha -1 + straw, T 2 : 60 kg K 6 :40 kg K foliar spray at Panicle initiation stage, T : control. Following IRRI protocol both plant and soil samples were collected at critical growth stages and analysis was done using standard methods. Treatment with 40kg K 2 O ha -1 applied through fertilizer along with a foliar spray(1% KNO 1 3 ) at Panicle initiation stage yielded highest in both Rabi (3.84 tha ) season. The yield was at par with those in 60kg K 2 O ha -1 and 30kg K -1 2 O ha 2 O ha ) and Kharif (5.35 tha 2 O ha +straw in Rabi and 80kg K 2 O ha -1 and 30kg K 2 O ha -1 +straw in Kharif. In Rabi the crop responded up to 60kg K 2 O ha -1 applied through fertilizer and 30kg K 2 O ha -1 applied through fertilizer +straw. At 80kg K 2 O or 40kgK 2 O ha -1 + straw the yield declined. Treatment that received K only through fertilizer with or without foliar spray showed negative balance where as application of K through straw alone or in combination with fertilizer showed positive balance of K in soil. When calculated on annual basis total K balance varied between -140 to 89.1 kg ha -1 year -1 with the treatment that received 40 kg K O with foliar spray and produced highest yield in both Rabi and Kharif seasons causing highest negative balance and the treatment, 30 kg K O as fertilizer along with straw caused highest positive balance. Besides adding potassium, paddy straw incorporation also caused improvement of biological health and added all other nutrients to soil. 2 In both the seasons the treatment receiving higher dose of K showed the lower Percentage of Disease Incidence (PDI). Insect incidence was more in control or where only straw was applied, but less where more K was applied. Incidence of both disease and insects was moderate with combined application of both fertilizer K and straw. Considering, crop yield, K balance, effect on soil health and disease and insect incidence, application of 30 kg K 2 O ha -1 through fertilizer along with straw incorporation is suggested as the best management option for rice-rice system.
