Abstract
Muskmelon is one of the melon group of vegetable belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae. In Karnataka it is called by local name as Krbhooja. It was rich in vitamins and minerals and the fruits possess cooling, aphrodisiac and biliousness properties and are useful in kidney problems and dyspepsia. Present field experiment was carried out at Department of Vegetable Science, College of Horticulture, Bagalkot during the year 2012-2013 rabi season to evaluate eight muskmelon F1 hybrids with standard check Arka Jeet for growth, yield, quality, resistant to disease and economics. The F1 hybrid Tamanna performed better for growth characters such as vine length (160.20 cm) and number of leaves (158.46), while the F1 hybrid NS-910 performed well for yield attributes such as number of fruits (4.60), fruit weight (863.13 g) and total fruit yield (34.52 t/ha) and it was also moderately resistant to powdery mildew followed by Tamanna (32.37 t/ha) and Kundan (31.91 t/ha). With respect to quality parameters viz., β-carotene content and total soluble solids were higher in F1 hybrid NS-910 (17.86 IU and 13.56 0Brix respectively) followed by NS-7455 (17.66 IU and 13.50 0Brix respectively). Finally it can be inferred that among the F1 hybrids NS-910, Tamanna and Kundan were high yielding ability with high returns ( 586840.00, 550290.00 and 510660.00 respectively) and can be recommended for the commercial cultivation in the famers field of Northern dry zone of Karnataka.
