Abstract
We are living in a globalised world and media occupies a distinguished place. The
basic impetus behind initiating this research was to explore the changing sources of
news particularly of rural youth. The study was conducted with twin objectives i.e. to
map the changing sources of news of rural youth in Punjab and to suggest intelligent
use of Internet to rural youth. A survey method with sample of 100 rural youth was
use with a questionnaire comprising 17 questions. Analysis technique and the
percentage method was used. An overwhelming number of rural youth (91 percent)
are interested in knowing the latest happenings in their surroundings. About half of
the youth (46 percent) get news at both morning and evening time. Television is the
most preferred medium for the latest news updates (81 percent). Only one fifth (21
percent) tune to radio. PTC Punjabi occupies the highest place (74 percent) followed
by Fastway News (46 percent). Surprisingly none of the respondent reported any
English news channel. Punjabi Newspaper, ‘Ajit’ has highest readers (58 percent)
followed by Jagbani (48 percent). An overwhelming number of rural youth (83
percent) are crazy for smart phones. Three fourth of the respondents (76 percent) had
internet facility. More than half of the respondents (51 percent) never used internet for
searching jobs. It is heartening to know that about half of the respondents (44 percent)
reported use of internet for agricultural related search.
