Abstract
The present study entitled “Effect of date of sowing and irrigation levels on yield of bottle gourd” was carried out at the Research Farm and Laboratory of Department of Vegetable Science, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during the summer season, 2010. The experiment was laid out in a factorial RBD design with three replications having three levels of irrigation (50 mm CPE,75 mm CPE and 100mm CPE), three date of sowing(25 February, 12 March, 25 March) and two cultivars (variety GH-22 and hybrid HBGH-35), thus making a total of eighteen treatments combinations. The plot size per treatment was 15 m2 (2 raised beds of 2.5×3m accommodating ten plants spaced at 60cm). The earliest appearance of first female flower, lowest node to first female flower and minimum number of days was taken for first fruiting period with D1–25 February and I1–50 mm CPE. Maximum length of fruit, fruit diameter was recorded in 25 March sowing with irrigation at 100 mm CPE. Application of irrigation at 50 mm CPE and 25 February sowing results in maximum number of branches per vine, maximum average fruit weight and longest fruiting period. Maximum number of fruits per vine, fruit yield per plant (kg/vine) and total fruit yield (q/ha) was recorded with D1–25 February and I1–50 mm CPE. The treatment combination D1 (25 February), I1 (50mm CPE) and variety V2 (HBGH-35) showed maximum net return of Rs.1,11,237/ha followed by D1V1I1 Rs.1,00,926/ha.
