Abstract
To understand the adaptability of Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce to drought, genes expressed under drought stress needed to be identified. A step towards characterization of the genes that contribute to combating abiotic stress in P. cineraria, drought responsive cDNA library was constructed and analyzed. One-month-old seedlings were subjected to drought stress by growing them in PEG 6000 (35%) for a period of 10 days. The Relative Water Content (RWC) of the seedlings was studied to estimate the drought stress and it was observed to be in the range 79.38 % to 58.33% over a period of 10 days of drought stress. The resulting library consisted of 564 good quality reads ESTs of which 164 showed significant homology to genes expressed in stress response. The drought stress responsive P. cineraria library had 46 unigenes, 28 genes involved in diverse biological functions, 15 were genes for hypothetical function and 3 genes of unknown function.
