Abstract
or District of Andhra Pradesh” was intended to analyse costs and returns, resource productivity and allocative efficiency in the cultivation of millets. The study covered two mandals and four villages and a sample of eighty farmers was selected at random from four villages. The primary data for the year 2012-13 were collected through a pretested schedule by survey method. Conventional and functional analysis were used to analyse the data and to arrive at valid conclusions. The cost of cultivation of ragi and bajra was estimated at `39,162.65 and `39,271.85 per hectare respectively. There was no marked difference in the cost of cultivation between the selected millets. On an average the selected farmers, produced 23.50 quintals of ragi and 40.00 quintals of bajra. The findings of the study revealed that the sample farmers incurred `1,666.49 and `981.80 for producing a quintal of ragi and bajra respectively. The cost of production was higher in ragi compared to bajra. The gross and net returns per hectare of ragi and bajra were `55,000 and `15,875.35 and `56,000 and `16,728.15 respectively. The net income per rupee of expenditure was Re.0.40 and Re.0.43 in the cultivation of ragi and bajra respectively. The functional analysis revealed that human labour and fertilizers in ragi, human labour, seeds and fertilizers in bajra significantly contributed to increase in yields. The MVP to MFC ratio was greater than unity for human labour and fertilizers in ragi and for human labour in bajra indicating greater potentiality for further use.
