Abstract
Solid waste disposal problem is very severe in the major cities of Punjab. Selection of suitable
site for solid waste disposal assumes importance. The Ludhiana city was selected for
identification of suitable sites for solid waste dumping/landfilling in the present study using
various satellite images of CARTOSAT-I, IRS LISS-IV for period 2008-09. Geographical
Information Systems (GIS) based methodology was applied to identify and select suitable
sites for dumping of waste. Various parameters for the selection of suitable sites such as
distance from built-up, forests/plantations, water bodies (viz. the river, canals, drains and
ponds), transportation along with wasteland, geology and ground water depth were examined.
Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model was incorporated in GIS environment to obtain
the weightages of different criteria for overlaying them according to their priority. Various
thematic maps such as land use land cover, built-up and water bodies, forests and plantations,
waste land, transportation, geology and ground water table maps and respective buffer and
classified maps were prepared. The site suitability map for solid waste dumping/landfilling
was prepared by considering proximity to the religious places, recreational places, lithology,
rivers and drains and five suitable sites were identified. The largest site for solid waste
dumping/landfilling covering an area of 100.78 ha under highly suitable class situated in
Alamgir village at a distance of 10 km from centre of the city was recommended for dumping
of waste. The remaining four sites located in Issewal, Dakha, Narangwal and Assi Kalan
villages under moderately suitable class having an area of 92.14 ha, 77.32 ha, 50.89 ha and
25.69 ha respectively were identified for possible dumping of solid waste.
