Abstract
The self- help group is a small voluntarily formed group of people who have same poor economic
conditions and low status of living preferably from the same socio-economic background. They come together for
the purpose of solving their common problems through self-help. The present study was carried out with objectives
to study the socio-economic profile of SHGs, to assess the impact of SHGs in promotion of entrepreneurial skills
and to identify the constraints perceived by the SHGs. Mewat district was purposively selected because it has
highest number of self-help groups in the state. Four blocks were selected purposively i.e.,Nuh, Nagina, FerozpurZhirka and Punhana and five SHGs were selected from each block. From each group, 25 members were selected,
and the total sample of 100 respondents was selected. The primary data for the agricultural year 2013-14 were
collected by survey method by conducting personal interview of the selected respondents with the help of specially
designed schedules. The majority of the SHG members were middle aged and few of them were old aged
members, it means that the involvement of the middle aged members in the group activities was more than the
young and old aged members. It may be due to the fact that middle aged members are more energetic and have
more knowledge and skills. It was found that above half of the respondents had middle level of education. Most of
them were married and few were unmarried. So, the unmarried members should also be motivated and trained to
acquire skills so that they can earn their own income. The members of SHGs should be given training on various
income generating activities which have demand in the local market. Exposure visits may also be arranged for
them to generate a greater impact on the quality of product produced by beneficiaries. This will help in increasing
their knowledge and skills. Majority of the respondents had medium level of economic motivation, decision
making ability and risk orientation. SHGs gave high impact on economic development and of the respondent's,
followed by the socio-cultural, legal/ political, infrastructure/educational, family/interpersonal and psychological.
The major problems faced by the respondents in effective functioning of SHG were: the price problem, delay in
getting loan, improper demand supply chain commodities, marketing and transportation.
