Abstract
The present investigations entitled “Genotypic evaluation of miniature, polyantha and floribunda roses (Rosa hybrida L.) for pot culture” were undertaken at Research Farms, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, PAU, Ludhiana, during 2014-15-. The rose genotypes were evaluated with respect to growth and flowering behaviour of miniature (cv. Centre Piece), polyantha (cv. Marjory Fair) and floribunda (cv. Iceberg) roses and to standardize the growing media for their pot culture. The survival percentage was maximum in cv. Marjory Fair i.e 91.96% (103/112 plants survived)) and the lowest in cv. Iceberg i.e 5.35% (6/112 plants survived). In cv. Marjory Fair, the plant height (18.33 cm, 20.30 cm, 20.32 cm), plant spread (18.20 cm, 19.31 cm, 20.07 cm) and number of branches (10.28, 11.16, 14.17) were more than miniature (cv. Centre Piece) on first flower bud appearance, 15- days and 30 days after first flower bud appearance, respectively. Flower bud length, flower longevity, days to flowering and duration of flowering were more in cv. Marjory Fair i.e. 1.82 cm, 34.17 days, 80.52 days and 50.05 days than cv. Centre Piece i.e 1.40 cm, 23.33 days, 74.12 days, and 42.83 days, respectively. Flower diameter was more in cv. Centre Piece (4.70 cm) than in cv. Marjory Fair cv. (3.32 cm). The number of flowers per plant was more in cv. Marjory Fair (5.17, 7.16 and 9.09) than cv. Centre Piece (2.05, 3.07 and 3.00) on first flower bud appearance, 15- days and 30 days after first flower bud appearance, respectively. The different growing media compositions significantly (p<0.05) affected the plant growth and flowering. Plant height i.e (21.71 cm, 22.88 cm and 23.08 cm), plant spread (16.72 cm, 17.66 cm and 18.50 cm) and number of branches (9.60, 11.75 and 13.82) at flower bud appearance and 15- and 30 days after flower bud appearance respectively were significantly more in T2: Cocopeat + Perlite + Vermiculite (3:1:1) than all the other treatments, irrespective of the cultivars. Plant height, plant spread and number of branches were significantly more in Marjory Fair (19.57 cm, 14.10 cm and 12.32) than Centre Piece (17.20 cm, 12.47 cm and 9.17), irrespective of the growing media. The minimum days to flowering (64.66 days) were observed in T2: Cocopeat + Perlite + Vermiculite (3:1:1). The rose cv. Centre Piece was early flowering (71.12 days) than cv. Marjory Fair (77.36 days). The flower duration was the maximum (50.76 days) in T2: Cocopeat + Perlite + Vermiculite (3:1:1). The flower duration was significantly more in cv. Marjory Fair (47.12 days) than cv. Centre Piece (39.98 days). The maximum flower diameter (4.98 cm) was observed in T2: Cocopeat + Perlite + Vermiculite (3:1:1) and flower diameter was more in cv. Centre Piece (4.55 cm) than cv. Marjory Fair (3.56 cm), irrespective of the growing media. The maximum flower bud length (1.85 cm) was observed in T4: Vermicompost + Perlite + Vermiculite (3:1:1) in cv. Marjory Fair. In T2: Cocopeat + Perlite + Vermiculite (3:1:1), number of flowers (6.46, 9.56 and 12.15-) at flower bud appearance and 15-- and 30 days after flower bud appearance were significantly more than all the other treatments, irrespective of the cultivars. The number of flowers were significantly more in Marjory Fair (5.28, 7.36 and 12.15-) than Centre Piece (2.86, 3.96 and 5.21), irrespective of the growing media. In the leaf tissue analysis, pH was found maximum (7.90) in Soil (control). Likewise, bulk density and EC were also maximum in Soil (control) i.e 0.82 g/cT3 and 8.89 dS/m, however, bulk density and EC were minimum in T2: Cocopeat + Perlite + Vermiculite (3:1:1) i.e 0.13 g/cT3 and 2.41 dS/m, respectively.
