Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Characterization and variability studies in okra” was carried out at Research Farm of the Department of Vegetable Science, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during spring summer season of 2012-13 on the basis of characterization and variability present in thirty okra genotypes. The observations were recorded from 14 quantitative and 16 qualitative characters. The genotypes were categorized on the basis of leaf characters like leaf margin dentation, colour between veins, intensity of colour between veins, vein colour, leaf colour, leaf blade size, depth of lobbing and petiole length. Stem character like stem colour and flower character as petal base colour were also found key characters to differentiate the okra genotypes. Fruit colour, surface between ridges, constriction of basal parts, fruit apex, fruit thickness and fruit length were the different fruit characters which differentiate the okra genotypes. Analysis of variance studies indicated significant difference among all the genotypes for all the characters under study. Highest mean for fruit yield per plant was recorded in the genotype HRB-108-2- 2. The genotypes HRB-108-2-2, HRB-108-1-1, HRB-124-1-1, HRB-146-1-1-2 and HRB-151-1-1 were the superior for the characters like fruit yield per plant and its related characters number of branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, number of fruits per plant and fruit weight. The number of branches per plant, number of nodes per plant and fruit yield per plant expressed high phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) value indicates greater variation for these traits and thus there is greater scope for further improvement by genetic manipulation. The number of branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant showed high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean possibly due to additive gene effects and the simple selection based on phenotypic performance of these traits would be more effective. Positive correlation shown by characters like plant height, number of branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, number of fruits per plant and fruit weight with fruit yield per plant. It indicated that the improvement in these traits leads to increase in fruit yield per plant. The high direct effect of number of fruits per plant and fruit weight on fruit yield per plant suggested that direct selection based on these characters would result in higher breeding efficiency for improving fruit yield in okra.
