Abstract
A study to investigate the influence of different dates of planting on growth and root yield of medicinal coleus is an essential pre-requisite in the packages of practices of any crop in a particular region. This information helps the farmers to get higher root yields. The tuberous roots of Coleus forskohlii contain an active biocompound called Forskolin which is having a wide range of bioactivity related to antihypotensive, positive intropic and adenyl cyclase activating property. In the present study, a field trial consisting six treatments (monthly plantings) was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with four replications at Herbal Garden, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The data were recorded for eight morphological and four biochemical observations. Morphological observations were taken for growth analysis. Biochemical observations were taken to support the growth and yield pattern of the crop in different seasons. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences between treatments (monthly plantings). Better growth and root yields were obtained in early plantings (August and July plantings) whereas, delayed plantings (November and December plantings) showed lower yields. The yield potential of the crop was studied through analysis of biochemical parameters like nitrate reductase (NR) activity and soluble protein estimation suggesting that delayed plantings (November and December plantings) were subjected to unfavourable environmental conditions which in turn affected plant metabolism. Correlation analysis revealed that total biomass production which is the result of better plant metabolism is positively correlated with root yield.
