Abstract
A study was carried out to see the impact of !CDS on
pre-school children, pregnant and lactating women in Marpally
Project Area (Rangareddy district, Andhra Pradesh). A total
of 270 !CDS beneficiaries and 270 Non-ICDS subjects of
similar socio-economic status were selected for comparison.
Nutritional Status was assessed by anthropometry and
clinical examination. Anthropometric measurements of height,
weight, mid-arm circumference, head and chest circumferences
were recorded, and immunization status of children was also
noted. Food and Nutrient intake of pre-school children,
pregnant and lactating women was collected using 24 hour
~ecall method. Knowledge levels of mothers in nutrition and
health areas was tested by a questionnaire. The coverage of
prophylaxis against nutritional anaemia and Vitamin A
deficiency was also collected.
The values of anthropometric measurements of !CDs
group were significantly greater than Non-ICDS group with few
exceptions. The pre-school children were classified into
different grades of malnutrition according to weight for age,
height for age, mid-arm circumference for age and chest/head
ratio. By above all parameters higher per cent of !CDs
children c ~ me under normal category than Non-ICDS group. The
prevalencL of protein calorie malnutrition by Gomez
classification was more (89%) in Non-ICDS group than !CDS
group (65%).
The prevalence of various nutritional deficiency
signs were more among Non-ICDS group than ICDS group, and the
coverage of all types of immunization was much greater in
ICDS group than Non-ICDS group.
In general cereal and pulse intake was more than
RDA. The intake of all other foods like fruits, milk, leafy
vegetables, other vegetables, flesh foods, fats and oils were
much low<·r than RDA. Hence the intake of ascorbic acid,
retinal, calcium and riboflavin were grossly inadequate. The
food and nutrient intake in ICDS group was higher than NonICDS
group though not statistically significant ; But in case
of calorie~ and proteins~ ICDS group had significantly
greater intake than Non-ICDS group. The acceptance of
supplementary food was 85 per cent among children, while it
was only 56-60 per cent among pregnant and lactating women
due to lack of awareness and misconcepts.
The mothers of ICDS group had significantly higher
knowledge in Nutrition and Health aspects than Non-ICDS group
a'nd the pr'1'cent of women having high and average knowledge
were more in ICDS than in Non-ICDS.
The coverage of Vitamin A prophylaxis among children
was 53 per cent and the coverage of prophylaxis against
nutritional anaemia was 21 and 50 per cent among pregnant
women. Thus the ICDS showed a positive impact on health,
nut ~ itional status and nutritional knowledge of pre-school
children and their mothers in the present study.
