Abstract
Pre school years are the most formative years as the
foundation for later development is laid at this stage. Any
impov~ent suffered at this delicate stage is likely to have
a major impact on subsequent development. Government of India
approved Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDS) in
the year 1975 · providedto the children from the deprived
sections of the society, the basic services for a better start
in life. The ICDS Programme offers children , as it has now
been recognized that the early years are a time of rapid physical
and mental growth for the child.
Personal-social behaviour embraces the child's personal
reactions to others and is basic to any adjustment of the child
in school. Children are expected to become better adjusted to
social life with each passing year and to confirm to social
expectations for their ages. Social participation provides
opportunities to improve social skills that contribute towards
greater acceptance .
A large population of the pre school children has grown
without any worthwhile developmental services for them. In view
of the critical importance of early years, 1 Modified Programmes•
need to be formulated for enrichment and remediation in order to
increase the quality oflife of children and prevent the occurrence
of problems in later development.
The present study aimed at studying the effect of the
modified programme on the personal-social behaviour of the
anganwadi children.
The anganwadis were selected from three villages out
of which five anganwadis were classified as the experimental
group and the other five as the control group. A total of 100
children were selected for the study, fifty children from the
experimental group and the other fifty from the control group.
The Modified Programme was implemented only to the experimental
group and later the two groups were tested to study the differences
resulting from the effect of the modified programme.
Appropriate statistical procedures were used for testing purposes.
The results indicated that the experimental group of
children showed a definite improvement in their personal-social
?ehaviour after the implementation of the modified programme
as compared with the control group of children who were not
exposed to the modified programme. the scores of the experimental
group of children were higher in all the personal-social
characteristics than the control group of children.
