Abstract
Studies on pod bug complex of Arid legumes viz Field bean, Cowpea, Greengram, Horse gram, clusterbean (vegetable type) Cluster bean seed type (Guar) were carried out during November 2007 to April 2008 in Dryland farm and in Entomology laboratory at Regional Agricultural Research station and S.V.Agricultural College Tirupati. Four sap sucking bugs viz., Riptortus pedestris F, tur pod bug Clavigralla gibbosa Spinola, Green stink bug, Nezara viridula. L and Coptosoma cribraria. L were identified in arid legume crop ecosystem at Tirupati, located in southern zone of A.P. In field bean and cowpea, incidence of R.pedestris, C.gibbosa, C.Cribraria started from 51 standard week and continued up to 15th standard week of 2008. In green gram, population of C.gibbosa was noticed on 2nd standard week and continued up to 8th standard week while C.cribraria was noticed from 4th standard week to 15th standard week. Regarding natural enemies, an egg parasitoid Gryon fulviventris and two unidentified spiders were found to be active on different life stages of pod bugs and suppress the bugs population naturally. Studies on biology and morphometrics of R.pedestris and C.gibbosa were carried out under laboratory conditions. Studies revealed that in case of R.pedestris the average incubation period was 5.55 days. The mean nymphal period was 18.61, 17.85, 17.84 days in green gram, cowpea and field bean, respectively. The average incubation period of C.gibbosa was 7.6 days and average total nymphal period was 20.61, 18.32, 18.11 days in green gram, cowpea, field bean, respectively. The evaluation of insecticides on field bean against pod sucking bug revealed that dimethoate (0.06%) was effective with 81.4% reduction of bug population. Among the insecticides of plant origin NSKE (5%), neem oil (0.5%), Annona seed extract (5%), pongamia seed extract, (5%) Annona leaf extract (5%), Pongamia leaf extract (5%) recorded average of 66.1%, 53.4%, 42.4%, 24.9%, 22.6% and 17.6% reduction of bug population respectively. Two entomopathogenic fungi Metarrhizium anisopliae (1x107 spores/ml) Beauveria bassiana (1x107 spores/ ml) recorded about 50 percent average of reduction of bug population. Dimethoate (0.06%) treatment recorded maximum fresh pod yield of 5333 kg/ha followed by NSKE (5%), and neem oil (5%), annona seed extract (5%). Lowest pod yield was recorded in treatment with Pongamia leaf extract (3973.3 kg /ha)
