Abstract
The research work “Laparoscopic assisted diagnosis and surgical management of intestinal obstruction in dogs” was conducted at the Veterinary Clinical Complex, Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur, from December 2020 to November 2021, where the dogs were screened for intestinal affections as evident from history and relevant symptoms such as anorexia, inappetence, vomiting, tenesmus, abdominal pain or discomfort, etc.
A total of 24 cases of intestinal disorders were included in the present study. The 50% (n=12) cases were of intestinal obstruction and intussusceptions, each. The dogs that presented with intestinal affections ranged from 1.5 months to 18 months with higher prevalence in young dogs below the age of six months. Breed wise prevalence was highest in Labrador (33%) followed by Non-descript (25%). Intestinal affection was recorded more in male dogs (67%). The duration of illness ranged from 2-15 days. Vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia were the predominant clinical signs. Physical examination revealed varying degrees of dehydration and palpable intussusception and intestinal obstruction in ten cases and 11 cases, respectively. All dogs were assessed with radiographic and ultrasonographic examination followed by laparoscopic visualization except in two cases
The laparoscopic-assisted reduction of intussusception was successful in the cases presented and diagnosed earlier. Also, late presentation of the case and longer duration of illness results in the formation of adhesions and ischemia which requires resection and anastomosis for its correction. Diagnostic laparoscopy was performed to visualize and identify the site of intestinal obstruction. Nine non-linear foreign bodies resulting in intraluminal obstruction of intestine was diagnosed and in one case, enlarged mesenteric lymph node resulting in extraluminal obstruction of intestine was noted.
Laparoscopic-assisted enterotomy was performed in nine dogs associated with intraluminal obstruction. The laparoscopic-assisted approach seemed to be less traumatic in the extraction of the foreign body. During the present study, haema-biochemical parameters were recorded at scheduled intervals. Statistically significant changes were observed in PCV, TLC, Neutrophil, serum chloride, serum sodium and serum alkaline phosphatases while hemoglobin, TEC, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, basophil, BUN, serum creatinine, serum potassium, albumin and total protein were found statistically non-significant.
