Abstract
The present study investigates the export performance of basmati rice from India. Basmati rice is a novel cereal crop characterized by long grain, superior aroma and unique flavour. This scented pearl is a blessing to the Himalayan foot hills of the Indian subcontinent. India solely produces 70 per cent of the total world production. Major Basmati producing states include Haryana, Punjab, Western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi. The secondary data for the last 20 years from 1999-2000 to 2018-2019 for the area, production, productivity, domestic and international price, export quantity and export value were collected from Agricultural and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority (APEDA), Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) and indiastat website. The entire 20 years data were divided into sub periods i.e. Period I (1999-2000 to 2008-2009), Period II (2009-2010 to 2018-2019) and overall period (1999-2000 to 2018-2019). The Compound Growth rate in area, production, productivity, export quantity and earnings were estimated by using the exponential method. Instability in the same was assessed by using the Coefficient of variation and Coppockā€™s Instability Index (CII). The trend in domestic and international price was estimated by using different parametric models and Nominal Protection Coefficient was used to study the export competitiveness. The results revealed that, the compound growth rate of area, production and productivity, export quantity and export value were found to be positive and significant during the overall period. The coefficient of variation and CII with respect to area was 36.57 per cent and 36.80 per cent, respectively, with respect to production and productivity it was 46.77 per cent and 20.04 per cent and 37.07 per cent and 13.18 per cent, respectively. Export quantity and earnings showed higher instability during the overall period. Country-wise export of basmati rice measured in terms of quantity and value showed the highest compound growth rate in Iran and Iraq and lowest growth rate in UK as compared to other basmati rice importing countries from India. Country-wise export performance showed highest instability in Iran, Iraq and Qatar and lowest instability in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and UK. The results of trend analysis showed that the exponential model was best fitted for both domestic and international market. NPC value of Basmati rice indicated that basmati rice has strong export competitiveness. Thus, the present study concludes that basmati rice has great export potential in future and concerned efforts must be taken up to increase the production and productivity of basmati rice.
