Abstract
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare launched a scheme Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) for promotion of farm mechanization during the year 2014- 15. Keeping in view the functioning of SMAM scheme, a study entitled “Impact Assessment of Farm Machinery Bank (FMB) under Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) in Jammu Division.” was conducted in Jammu, Doda and Samba districts of Jammu & Kashmir (UT). Multi stage sampling plan was followed for the selection of ultimate respondents. The result of the study showed that, the average age of FMB adopted and Non-FMB adopted members were 46.68± 1.08 and 47.34± 9.88 years respectively. Average operational land holding of FMB and Non-FMB members were 1.03±0.54 and 0.69±0.28 ha respectively. The study further revealed that 27 % FMB members adopted laser levelers and 47 % adopted seed drill, whereas, reaper was adopted by 45 % respondents. Majority of the FMB members reported that main reasons for using farm machinery from FMBs were economical followed by increase in income whereas in case of non FMB adopted farmers, the reasons were quicker operation followed by drudgery reduction. There was a significant difference between FMB adopted farmers and non FMB adopted farmers with respect to the increase in overall average household income from all sources i.e. Rs 211107.21±102331.39 and Rs 88637.97±64847.21 respectively. There is a significant difference between FMB adopted farmers and non FMB adopted farmers with respect to the increase in average area in hectares under following crops viz; rice (Basmati – 370), wheat (HD – 2967), maize (Double Dekalb), (Kanchan) and Rajmash (Local) i.e. 1.13±0.62 and 0.72±0.24, 0.857±0.460 and 0.618±0.222, 0.69±0.38 and 0.51±0.18, 1.15±0.35 and 0.618±0.191, 0.91±0.39 and 0.617±0.148 respectively. There was a significant difference between FMB adopted farmers and non FMB adopted farmers with respect to the increase in average productivity (q/ha) of wheat (HD – 2967) i.e. 29.97±10.70 and 29.83±10.32 respectively.
