Abstract
The role played by parents is of significance throughout the life span. Parenting role has its unique characteristics and affects the developmental characteristics of the children as they grow. Parents play a vital and the most influential role throughout the life of an individual, specifically from birth until adolescence. They not only fulfill the biological needs such as physical care, proper food, fresh air, good lightning, enough sleep and recreation but also endow a safe, nurturing and supportive environment in order to foster an optimistic and overall development of the child through guidance, communication and interaction between the two generations. When this type of parenting is effective, the norms set by the parents will be internalized by the children. Keeping in view this perspective, the present study was conducted with the purpose to explore the relationship between parental practices and acquisition of moral values among children (9-12 years) belonging to high, middle and low income group nuclear families and residing in Udaipur city. A sample of 300 students (100 students, i.e. 50 boys and 50 girls, belonging to each income group) was drawn purposively through a preliminary survey in selected schools. The tools on “Parental Practices” and “Moral Value System” were constructed and standardized to assess and compare the parental practices and moral values of children. For assessing the level of parental practices and moral values in children based on gender and socio economic status, ‘Frequency’ and ‘Percentage’ were calculated for various selected dimensions. For comparing perception of parental practices and the level of moral values in children based on gender, Z-test for difference between two means was computed. To compare the data on the basis of socioeconomic status, one way ANOVA test was used to find out the difference in parental practices and level of moral values in children belonging to high, middle and low income group. To find out the association of perception of parental practices and acquisition of moral values, chisquare test was used. Results of the study indicate that greater number of respondents obtained higher range of scores in the percentage distribution for the level of parental practices. There were no significant differences observed in the level of parental practices gender wise, whereas, significant differences were observed in the level of parental practices on the basis of socio-economic status, i.e., highest in the children from high income group families, followed by middle and lowest in the low income group families. Maximum number of respondents obtained higher range of scores in the percentage distribution for the level of moral values system. There was no significant difference observed gender wise, while, there were significant differences observed in the scores obtained in each income group. Majority of children from high income group were having high level of positive moral values, followed by middle and least was in children belonging to low income group. In case of negative values, majority of children from high income group were having low level of negative moral values, while children from the low income group were observed to have higher level of negative moral values. As per the results of the present study, there was an overall association between perception of parental practices and acquisition of moral values. There was a significant association observed between perception of parental practices and moral values in females. With regard to the socio-economic status, there was association between perception of parental practices and moral values for children belonging to low income group families. Case-studies were conducted to find out the impact of parental practices and factors affecting in acquisition of moral values in children. Guidelines were formulated the family, educational institutions and community on the basis of case study and findings of the study.
