Abstract
The present study deals with the chemistry and antioxidant potential of cinnamon bark essential oil, solvent extracts and isolated major constituent. Along with this evaluation of essential oil, solvent extracts, cinnamaldehyde and its derivatives against fungi viz. Macrophomina phaseolina, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium verticillioides was also done. Proximate analysis revealed that cinnamon bark contained moisture content (4.80%), total minerals (3.00%), crude fibre (33.36%), crude protein (3.06%), fats (2.90%) and carbohydrates (52.88%). Different solvent extracts were subjected to the qualitative phytochemical screening for the presence of different phytochemicals such as alkaloids, saponins, tannins, anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenols, glycosides, steroids and terpenoids. Different solvent extracts were also subjected for quantitative phytochemical screening for phenolics, tannins, saponins and flavonoids. Essential oil of cinnamon bark was extracted by hydrodistillation method using clevenger apparatus and yield was 2.23%. The chemical composition of essential oil was determined by GC-MS analysis. Trans-cinnamaldehyde (70.57%) was found to be major component in essential oil. Different derivatives of cinnamaldehyde viz. Schiff bases (II-III) and hydrazones (IV-V) were synthesized. UVvisible, IR and 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques were used for characterization of synthesized cinnamaldehyde derivatives. Antioxidant activity of methanol extract is more than cinnamon essential oil, cinnamaldehyde and other solvent extracts. Cinnamon essential oil is found to be most effective against M. phaseolina and F. verticillioides. In case of R. solani compound III was found to be most effective. None of the compound was found to be better than standard Carbendazim 50 WP.
