Abstract
The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of SKUAST-Jammu during the year 2020-2021 to assess the effect of mulching on growth, yield and quality of guava cv. L-49 under high density planting. Different mulching material i.e. T1-Saw dust (5cm thickness), T2-Saw dust (10 cm thickness), T3-Dry leaves (10 cm thickness), T4-Paddy straw (10 cm thickness), T5- Paddy straw (20 cm thickness), T6-Orchard grass (10 cm thickness), T7- Orchard grass (20 cm thickness), T8-Black polythene (100 gauge), T9-white polythene (100 gauge) were used for the experiment with no mulching as Control T10. Results revealed that highest tree volume (13.28 m3) average leaf area (68.35 cm2), leaf area index (3.65), chlorophyll content (49.10), fruit set % (76.60%), fruit yield (14.52 kg/plant) were recorded in T8- Black polythene mulch and minimum was recorded in no mulching as control. Besides ameliorating quality parameters in terms of fruit length (7.31 cm), fruit width (6.82 cm), fruit weight (133.31 g), fruit volume 172.16 cc), specific gravity (1.11 g/cm3), TSS (11.18 0Brix), reducing sugar (4.96%), non-reducing sugar (3.96%), total sugar (10.11%) and ascorbic acid (192.13%). Black polythene mulch also kept the tree basin weed free after 30, 60 and 90 days of mulching and maximum weed density of 58.76 per m2, 126.56 per m2 and 248.06 per m2 was observed in no mulching control after 30, 60 and 90 day of mulching respectively. Weeds such as Cynodon dactylon, Cynodon rotundus, Aegeratum conizoides, Cleome viscosa, Dactyloctenum aegyptiacum, Euphorbia hirta were observed in the experimental site during present investigation. Date of flower initiation was observed earliest with the use of black polythene mulch i.e. on 16th September were earliest to reach full bloom i.e. 8th October Soil moisture and soil temperature were also significantly highest in T8- black polythene mulch at 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after mulch application. Maximum B:C ratio (1:1.58) per plant and per treatment was observed in tree mulched with black polythene mulch.
