Abstract
A pot experiment was conducted in year 2020 in Division of Soil Science and Agriculture Chemistry, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & technology of Jammu to study the influence of biochar, polyacrylamide (PAM) and mixture of two in the presence of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer (100%RDF) on maize growth and physicochemical properties of sandy loam soil under rainfed condition. The addition of biochar and PAM along with RDF resulted in significant increase in soil physicochemical properties, crop performance and uptake of nutrients. The highest increase in soil moisture (1.35 times), maximum water holding capacity (1.34 times) and water stable aggregates (1.63 times) was recorded with the application of biochar @ 10 t ha-1 and PAM @10 kg ha-1 (B10PAM10) over control. The increase in infiltration rate and decrease in penetration resistance and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was noticed when soil was amended with biochar and PAM.Thesoilorganiccarbon, available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were significantly higher in T7biochar @ 10 t ha-1 and PAM @10 kg ha-1(B10PAM10) treatment over control. Greater root biomass, plant height and nutrient uptake was observed in combined application of biochar (@ 10 t ha-1) and PAM (@10 kg ha-1). The study concluded that addition of soil amendments biochar and PAM could enhance plant growth, soil aggregation, water retention and nutrient uptake in sandy loam soil.
