DOCUMENTATION OF CAULIFLOWER CULTIVATION PRACTICES ADOPTED BY FARMERS IN JAMMU REGION

Abstract
Among major vegetables grown in India, cauliflower (Brassica oleraceae var. botrytis) is one of the most important vegetable. The productivity of cauliflower in the country is 19.2 metric tonne per hectare, whereas it is 31.02 metric tonnes per hectare in UT of J&K. Keeping this in view, a study entitled “Documentation of cauliflower cultivation practices adopted by farmers in Jammu region” was undertaken during 2020-21 in Jammu district of Jammu region purposively to study the cultivation practices adopted by cauliflower growers and assess the factors responsible for cauliflower productivity in the region. Multistage sampling design was used to select the sample size of 160 farmers. The results revealed that mean age and education of the farmers in the study area was 52.11 (±10.68) and 9 (±2.19) years, respectively. Majority of the farmers were living in joint family with average family size of 5 members. About 76 per cent farmers and 61 per cent of respondent’s family members have agriculture as their primary and sole occupation. The average operational land holding of the respondents was 1.37 (±1.36) hectares with an average total irrigated area of 1.31 (±1.31) hectares. The majority of the respondents (74%) adopted hybrids of the cauliflower crop and among these more than half of the respondents (54%) adopted Girja hybrid of cauliflower. Further, majority of the farmers applied FYM (97%), urea as top dressing (98%) and DAP (97%) in main field of cauliflower crop. The major weed observed in the crop was Cyperus rotundus, major insect pest was Diamondback moth and Black rot was the major disease. Majority of the cauliflower growers adopted chemical control for weeds, insect-pest and disease management. The cauliflower productivity in the study area was 29.32 t/ha which is significantly similar to the J&K’s overall productivity. The various factors which significantly affected the cauliflower productivity in the study area were nitrogen application main field (0.277), FYM application in nursery (-0.087) and nitrogen application in nursery (-0.310). Six marketing channels were identified for cauliflower marketing and majority of the respondents (87%) sold their produce through Channel-I (Producer→ Commission Agent→ Retailer→ Consumer). Majority of the respondents (98%) expressed low price of produce at harvesting time and peak period as major constraint in cauliflower marketing.
