Abstract
Thepresentinvestigationentitled“Nutritionalstudiesforsoilandsoillessproductionofstrawberry(Fragaria×ananassa)cv.Chandler”wascarriedoutatexperimental area in the Division of Plant Physiology of Sher-e-Kashmir University ofAgricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, Main Campus, Chatha during 2020-21.The objective of this investigation was to find out the nutritional response in soil andsoilless medium for optimum strawberry production and to find out the economics for soiland soilless strawberry production. The experiment was laid out in hydroponics systemand potted soil culture in completely randomized design (CRD) with seven treatmentsreplicated thrice and the vegetative, reproductive, physical and biochemical parameters ofChandler strawberry were recorded. It was observed that minimum number of days weretaken for runner establishment (6.41) and the maximum average number of leaves perplant was 28.64. Highest values were recorded for average leaf area per plant (135.46cm2), leaf chlorophyll content (55.35), plant spread (42.47 cm) and root/shoot ratio (1.53)under T3 treatment i.e. cocopeat + vermiculite + vermicompost (1:1:1). Minimum valueswere obtained for number of days taken for first bud formation (64.74), days for firstflower initiation (68.80) and maximum values were recorded for average number of budsper plant (25.47) and average number of flowers per plant (25.33) under T3 treatment i.e.cocopeat + vermiculite + vermicompost (1:1:1). Maximum fruit length (3.92 cm), fruitbreadth (3.40 cm), fruit size (13.32 cm2), fruit colour (dark red), fruit weight (19.48 g),fruit volume (17.57 cc), specific gravity (1.11 g/cm3), number of fruits per plant (25.19)and yield per plant (490.69 g) were also recorded with T3 treatment i.e. cocopeat +vermiculite + vermicompost (1:1:1). Maximum total soluble solids (9.94 oB), total sugars(8.03 %), reducing sugars (6.21 %), non reducing sugars (1.73 %), ascorbic acid (51.10mg/100g), anthocyanin content (48.40 mg/100g), carotenoid content (18.04 mg/g) andminimum titratable acidity (0.81 %) were recorded under T3 treatment i.e. cocopeat +vermiculite+vermicompost(1:1:1).Aspereconomicanalysis,itwasfoundthatmaximum B:C ratio (1:2.5) was recorded under T3 treatment cocopeat + vermiculite +vermicompost(1:1:1).Itwasconcludedthatsubstratecombinationofcocopeat+vermiculite + vermicompost in the ratio of 1:1:1 in Hydroponics (NFT) may be beneficialfor better yield and quality production of strawberry cv. Chandler as compared to soilculture.
