Abstract
A field experiment named “Effect of Irrigation Frequency and Zinc Fertilization on Growth and Yield of Indian Mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czernj. Cosson]’’ was conducted at Instructional Farm, Agronomy, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur during rabi 2020. The experiment was laid out in split plot design having 12 treatment combinations replicated four times. The experiment having three levels of irrigation (one irrigation at seedling stage, two irrigations at seedling + pod formation stage and three irrigations at seedling+50% flowering+ pod formation stage) in main plots and four levels of zinc (control, 4 kg Zn ha-1, 8 kg Zn ha-1 and 12 kg Zn ha-1) in sub plots. The results revealed that three irrigations given at seedling, 50% flowering and pod formation stage significantly increased plant height, branches plant-1, leaf area index, dry matter accumulation, siliqua plant-1, seeds siliqua-1, test weight, seed yield (2110.82 kg ha-1), stover yield (4936.24 kg ha-1), biological yield (7047.06 kg ha-1), oil content, oil yield and protein yield, as compared to only one irrigation given at seedling stage. The treatments I2 (two irrigations at seedling and pod formation stage) and I3 (three irrigations at seedling, 50% flowering and pod formation stage) were remained statistically at par. Water use efficiency of mustard decreased with increasing levels of irrigation. Irrigation frequency had no any significant effect on harvest index, protein content, nutrient (N, P, K and Zn) content in seed and stover as well as soil pH, EC, organic carbon, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc after harvest of mustard crop. Plant height, branches plant-1, leaf area index, dry matter accumulation, siliqua plant-1, seeds siliqua-1, test weight, seed yield (2129.85 kg ha-1), stover yield (5050.25 kg ha-1), biological yield (7180.10 kg ha-1), oil content, oil yield, protein content and protein yield were increased significantly up to application of 8 kg Zn ha-1. The treatments Zn8 (8 kg Zn ha-1) and Zn12 (12 kg Zn ha-1) were remained at par. The interaction of treatment I3 Zn12 gave maximum seed and stover yield. Nitrogen, potassium and zinc content and uptake by seed and stover of mustard as well as available nitrogen, potassium, sulphur and zinc in soil after harvest of crop increased significantly with application of 12 kg Zn ha-1 over control. Phosphorus content in seed and stover and available phosphorus in soil after harvest decreased with increasing levels of zinc. The water use efficiency of mustard was increased significantly with increasing levels of zinc up to 8 kg Zn ha-1.
