Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Varietal Response of Bio-inoculants on Horticultural Traits in Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)” was conducted during the year 2020-2021 with objectives (i) To study the effect of different bio-inoculants on growth, yield and quality traits in brinjal (ii) To identify most responsive brinjal varieties and bio-inoculants against biotic-stress traits (iii) To study the interactive effect of varieties and bio-inoculants on soil ecology. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (Factorial). The treatments comprise of two factors i.e. varieties and bio-inoculants. Among first factor three varieties i.e. Punjab Raunak, Pusa Purple Long, Punjab Sadabahar under the influence of bio-inoculants in the form of Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus spp., Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB), consortia of all and control were studied for growth, yield, quality, biotic-stress traits and soil ecological parameters. With respect to growth and yield parameters, minimum number of days for 50% flowering & first picking were recorded in Punjab Raunak under the influence of bio-inoculants application as seedling dip and foliar application during flowering stage. Maximum number of days for these parameters were recorded in Pusa Purple Long control treatment. Maximum plant height (88.65 cm), maximum number of branches per plant (5.71), maximum number of fruits per cluster (3.67) and per plant (53.73) were also in Punjab Raunak when inoculated with consortia of all bio-inoculants. Similarly, the maximum fruit length (19.58 cm), fruit diameter (3.78 cm), fruit weight (74.17 g), marketable fruit yield (6.0 Kg/plant) & (244.05 q/ha) was recorded in same treatment. The variety Pusa Purple Long in control treatment had highest un-marketable fruit yield (0.87 Kg/plant) and (20.86 q/ha). The quality parameters i.e. ascorbic acid, total phenols and total sugars varied significantly under bio-inoculations. Maximum ascorbic acid content (24.46 mg/100g), total phenol content (34.81 mg/100g) & minimum total sugars (4.78 %) was in Punjab Raunak when inoculated and foliar sprayed by the consortia of all bio-inoculants. The reducing sugars were not influenced by any of the treatment. The shoot & fruit borer infestation and the phomopsis blight incidence were also minimum in Punjab Raunak. Whereas, the Pusa Purple Long had highest value of these biotic-stress traits. The total microbial load (cfu/ml) comprising of bacterial, fungal and actinomycetes population varied significantly at the different growth stages of the crop. Maximum bacterial count (27.60 cfu/ml), fungal count (22.77 cfu/ml) & actinomycetes count (22.01 cfu/ml) was recorded in Punjab Raunak under the bio-inoculant application of consortia. The microbial load were maximum at the fruiting stage and decreased marginally as the plant progressed towards the harvesting stage.
